What To Expect From Your Child’s First Visit

Are you interested in scheduling a visit for your child, their first visit? We’re always excited to see new patients and help them with their oral health, from babies and toddlers to teens. At your Frisco, TX, children’s dental practice, our team is talking about what to expect from your child’s first visit!

When Kids Need to See the Dentist

We recommend an initial visit at around age one, once the first baby tooth has erupted. The American Dental Association also recommends this, and we look forward to starting little smiles on a journey to good oral health! The initial visit usually involves no treatment, and we will instead discuss feeding and oral habits, hygiene improvements, and common habits to avoid, such as thumb sucking. Once your little one is two, we can start routine checkups and cleanings every six months. Kids who regularly visit the dentist gain a better understanding of how to care for their teeth and gums and the reasons why it’s important. They’re also less likely to be afraid of the dentist, and may continue care when they reach their adult years.

When You Arrive

When you and your little one arrive, one adult will be allowed to accompany your child in the exam area. Our team can then discuss the results of the exam and talk about any treatments that may be necessary. We may take x-rays if your little one is at least five or older, so we take a detailed look at the smile. With our digital x-rays, your kid is exposed to 90% less radiation than traditional options. We will also conduct a visual exam of the teeth and gums. We want to make sure primary teeth are erupting as they should, and make sure your little one is free of issues like tooth decay and gingivitis. We want to help your child understand the value of good oral hygiene, to help him or her become accustomed to visiting the office, so they don’t experience dental anxiety as a teen or adult.

If you have any questions about our approach to children’s dentistry, or if you’re ready to start your child on the path to strong smiles with an initial exam and cleaning, then contact our team today to learn more. We look forward to helping your kid smile with confidence!
