Easing Dental Fears With Sedation

Does your child have a fear of the dentist? If so, we understand and we won’t try to minimize their anxieties. Instead, we want to take action to help your child enjoy a positive and relaxing experience in our office! At your Frisco, TX, children’s dental practice, we can offer a solution to dental phobias with sedation dentistry, so they can enjoy calm and relaxing visits!

When Kids Need a Calming Medication

We may recommend sedation for children if they’re undergoing more extensive procedures, such as the placement of a crown or a tooth extraction. If they have dental phobias, this can prevent them from undergoing even minor treatments, like a cleaning, and again sedation could be helpful. Children with special needs also often benefit from a calming treatment. Our team is skilled and experienced in the administration of a calming agent for kids, having partnered with the Children’s Medical Center. For advanced treatments, we work with trained and experienced professional anesthesiologists. This way, a dentist’s attention is never divided between treatment and sedation.

Choosing the Correct Calming Option

How do we choose a calming option for your little one? With our experience and help from trained anesthesiologists, we look at a number of factors to choose the right option for your child. For example, we take anxiety levels and the presence of special needs into account. We also look at age, weight, and medical history, as well as any medications your child is currently taking. With this information, we can choose the most appropriate option for your child.

Our Options

For many, we could opt for nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas. This mild form of sedation is administered through a mask over the nose. The child inhales the gas and enters a state of calm and euphoria, often with little memory of the procedure despite staying conscious. The effects wear off quickly!

If your child needs a deeper state of calm, we could discuss oral conscious sedation, given in a pill or liquid form. This provides a deeper state of calm, and the effects take time to wear off, so your child likely won’t return to school for the day. The deepest form is IV sedation, and again we have trained anesthesiologists on hand to monitor your little one and stay focused on them during the procedure.

If you have any questions about dental sedation, or if you have a child with symptoms who needs treatment, then reach out to our team today. We look forward to helping your little ones obtain a healthy smile that shines all summer long.
