Dr. Davis has been our dentist for almost 10 years. Each visit is a pleasant one with lots of smiles and friendly faces. Her team is responsive and caring. She responded to an emergency dental situation over the weekend within 30 minutes, called in a prescription, and saw us first things the next business day. We are more than pleased with Dr. Davis and the Healthy Smiles team!

Young boy and girl brushing their teeth happilyWondering how to make brushing fun for kids? You’ve come to the right place. As pediatric dentists, we get this question a lot. Although you’re able to take care of oral hygiene for your kids in their youngest years, as they get older, they take over and begin brushing their own teeth. Some kids like it—but most kids don’t. To make it a positive experience for them, you can use a few of the following tips.

Create a Fun Association

Instead of letting your kids see brushing as a boring chore, pair it with another enticing activity. Do they have a favorite song? Have them brush their teeth for the duration of the song. Do you have more than one kiddo at home? Have them brush together to make it a group activity and encourage them to develop their own brush time dance moves.

Let Them Choose Their Tools

Instead of picking out their toothbrush and toothpaste for them, encourage them to take part in the process. Take them to the store with you so they can be engaged with picking out their favorites—this creates exciting anticipation for when they get to use their new tools.

Model the Behavior

Being a kids’ dentist means we get to remind parents to brush as well! When your kids see you prioritize your oral hygiene, they follow in your footsteps. You know they model everything you do—even the things you wish they didn’t! Make use of their early childhood imitative behaviors, and become a good role model with your own daily dental hygiene routine.

Use a Reward System

If you’re dealing with an especially stubborn kiddo, implement a reward system. This could be something as simple as a sticker chart placed near the bathroom sink where they brush. This way, they can work up to a weekend reward if they brush every single night. When they see their progress, not only do they experience a feeling of accomplishment, but they can also choose a prize you agree on! Throughout their lives, kids require dental care—both at home and at your favorite dentist. Learn more about the services we offer and schedule your exam with Healthy Smiles Children’s Dentistry!
