We like to see children around their first birthday or when their first tooth erupts, as recommended by the American Dental Association.

That’s an excellent time to check the development of teeth, examine the oral cavity and check their bite. At this appointment, we discuss feeding habits, oral habits (pacifiers and thumb sucking), oral hygiene and other information to start your baby toward positive dental care.

One adult is invited back during the initial exam and at recall appointments. This allows us to discuss our findings and any treatment that may be necessary.

Providing parents information is part of our commitment to helping you care for your child’s oral health at home. Establishing a good oral hygiene regime is vital to a child’s development. We want to ensure every child achieves a healthy, beautiful smile throughout their life.

Should a dental emergency occur, we make every effort to see and care for your child as soon as possible.

Frequently asked Questions

What to Expect at Your Child's First Dental Visit

The first visit at the pediatric dentist office in Frisco will include an exam of teeth, gums, bite, and jaws to assess development. The first visit could include teeth cleaning to remove plaque and tartar. Depending on the age of the child, X-rays are taken when needed to diagnose an issue. In many cases, the first dental visit is more about getting the child comfortable with going to a dentist, showing a parent and child (depending on the age) proper home dental care between visits, and establishing a base dental assessment for future oral care.
Most of the time, dental X-rays are not taken until a child is at least five years old. After the age of seven, routine dental X-rays are taken similar to the schedule used for adults. In a young child, X-rays are used to ensure that proper dental development is occurring. However, if a child is younger than five and has experienced dental trauma or there are indications a dental problem is developing, X-rays might be necessary. Dental X-rays are quite safe and deliver a very small amount of radiation. Many safeguards are also taken to minimize the child’s exposure to radiation, including lead aprons and rapid digital imaging.
When you visit our pediatric dentist office in Frisco, it is important to come prepared with your specific concerns about the child’s dental status. Other steps to take include bringing a complete health history and information about your child’s known fears or anxieties that may impact behavior. It is helpful when parents teach children about oral care at home before the first visit, including making brushing teeth a fun experience and playing dentist. This often reduces their anxiety during the first dental visit.
